Editing

As an editor my role is to get the very best out of material which is written or provided by other people. This ranges from conceptualising and commissioning new publication to re-writing material produced by specialists into more accessible formats for targeted audiences.

I have extensive experience of seeing materials through all stages of production, of drawing up schedules, proof-reading and working with photographers, designers and printers.

  • For The Who Cares? Trust I edited the Equal Chances project materials – two action guides to help local authorities improve the educational outcomes of looked after children. I also edited the Right to Read report on improving literacy outcomes and reworked an initial report for the Need to Know project on local authority communications with looked after children.
  • I edited and provided additional materials for Barnardo’s Cost of Poverty report to ensure this linked closely with messages promoted through the organisation’s contemporary advertising campaign which asked readers to make links between children’s lives and their possible futures.
  • On behalf of British Association for Adoption & Fostering I compiled If you don’t stick with me who will?, an anthology of foster carers stories. I have also edited and reworked books and guides submitted by other writers to their publications department.
  • I worked with a team of young people to put together a lively, colourful newsletter from NCH’s ARTiculation Weekend. This was an arts weekend and the aim of the newsletter was to encourage other young people to attend the next time around.
  • For the DFES/Fostering Network recruitment campaign in 2000 I edited All About Fostering, a 40-page, full-colour glossy magazine for prospective foster carers, based on a format of women’s magazines. I commissioned all the features and artwork and managed all aspects of editing and production.
  • For Riverside Community Health Care NHS Trust I edited the staff newsletter, bringing together quite technical information from different disciplines into something that would appeal to staff without a medical background. I also edited documents on their policies on complaints, violence at work and internal and external communications.

Annual reports

I am regularly asked to help put together and/or edit annual reports. Some organisations I have compiled or edited annual reports for include:

  • Shelter
  • Action on Elder Abuse
  • National Blind Children’s Society
  • European Children’s Trust
  • British Association for Adoption & Fostering
  • Riverside Community Health Care NHS Trust
  • Intercountry Adoption Centre
